In her closing remarks in her very last (and large) show, Oprah said that God’s hand had been on her business, implying that her incredible success was due to that. That comment really stuck with me.
I started to ask myself, if her comment is true, what about those who try to live God-connected lives, who work hard and smart, but never achieve anywhere near Oprah’s success? Does that mean that God’s hand is NOT on their business? Does that mean that they will bust their gut, do their best, pour their talents, time and heart out, but that big ol’ hand will still be anywhere but hovering over them?
To be honest, asking myself this question has brought up stuff for me. I feel confused and sad. If my business is not a runaway success like Oprah, (even a mini version would do, er God…?) does that mean that God’s hand is withheld for some reason? And if so, what is the reason?
The implications are vast. Would God not put a hand on your business because of who you are? Or would it be conditional on you doing certain things in certain ways? Or does God prefer certain businesses to others? Or are the churches right, you need to repent your sins in order to receive the hand? Or does one person’s life path have the hand and the other not, simply by some esoteric new agey choice made at the beginning of this life?
Or maybe I am greedy, and the mere wanting a big hand makes sure all I get is a small hand? On the other hand, (there seem to be lots hands in this article) if Gods hand is the success factor in business, does it mean if a business is successful, that God’s hand is on it? Then I get to ask: what about massively wealthy empires built on crime, destruction and anything but Godly behaviour? I find it difficult to even consider that the big ol’ hand is on those businesses!
Searching for the answers to the big ol’ hand is feeling like a punch in the stomach at the moment, and I can’t help noticing how upset I feel as I consider that God’s hand might not be present on my business and life affairs – or that maybe Oprah got the whole hand and I will only ever the baby finger tip.
The truth is that I could write a book on the ways I have experienced God in my life and my business. From a being of light appearing to me in my sleep telling me about a new business venture to hearing dictation as I wrote a new book, surely these are examples of God’s hand on my life? But since I am not that Oprah runaway success, does this mean that God’s hand only sweeps fleetingly over my life and then moves on? Do I have a timeshare situation with the hand? Or should I say the Hand?
I’m taking some downtime (that means I am lying in bed all day) to consider all this and what it means (I wonder if Oprah ever takes downtime in bed in a state of confusion? Maybe God’s hand only works for people who have unending energy and never feel confused….) and I am remembering a time in 2009. I had just returned from a trip to India (a trip given me as a gift – definitely a sweep of the ol’ hand!).
As I settled back into London life, one night I dreamt I had been called in by a client. Before I started running the session, I sit down and meditate. A fly is circling the room. As I meditate it comes gently to reset in my open hand. In the dream I do nothing. It buzzes off to circle the room again. I realise I could have simply closed my fingers to catch it. I keep meditating. Unexpectedly it circles and land directly back in my hand. I close my fingers and release it outside. I realise that the job for the client is done. They had called me in to take out the fly. Dream ends.
Inspired by remembering my dream, I realise that all these questions can be answered without effort. So now I meditate. And the answer to all these questions will simply arrive. In my hand. About God’s Hand.
God turns you from one feeling to another and teaches by means of opposites so that you will have two wings to fly, not one. Rumi
